Outreach Program on the occasion of World Mental Health Day

Date: 8th October 2016

Every year the World Mental Health Day is observed on 10th October, with the overall objective of raising awareness of mental health issues around the world and mobilizing efforts in support of mental health. When individuals are troubled with various kinds of issues, they are reach out for support from health-care worker, counselors or a teacher. The theme of this year's World Mental Health Day, observed on 10 October, 2016 covers "psychological first aid". Efforts were made as means to provide basic psychological and social support to people who find themselves in a helping role whether they be teachers, less fortunate children, community workers, or housekeeping staff in an institution.

In order to spread awareness about mental health, students from Indian Institute of Psychology and Research (IIPR) Bangalore, visited various places such as Jeevodaya Ashram, Nirmala Shishu Bhavan, YET Orphanage (NGO), and Snehadaan (Camillian Community Care Centre for PLHIV). The students were proactive in their participation and were involved in activities which included the children, adults, and the staff of the institution. IIPR students implemented and shared knowledge on various techniques such as stress and anger management techniques, Jacobson's progressive relaxation techniques for the adults. Other activities such as effective means of listening and communication, and games such as promotion of positive talk among the peers were conducted on children as means to promote mindfulness and healthy living.

The outreach programme created an atmosphere of learning and experience to our students in enabling them to interact with the diverse population with varied needs.
