Course Description

The Master of Science in Psychology (MSc. Psychology) is a two year full time program that provides students with the right blend of theoretical knowledge along with laboratory practical and field experience. This prepares them to work in various specialized and applied fields of psychology. The course provides students the required qualification and skills to work as Psychologists.The Masters program grounds students in theory, research and practice, providing them a systemic and holistic approach in understanding human behaviour.

Course Duration

The Master of Science in Psychology(M.Sc. Psychology) is spread across 2 years over four semesters. Each semester is for a period of about four months.

Eligibility

Candidates with 40% marks in the aggregate of all the Optional Subjects in 3 years of Under graduation, with Psychology as one of the subjects and having scored aggregate 50% marks in the same.

Scope:
Students who successfully complete the requirements for Master of Science Degree in Psychology programme are eligible to pursue M.Phil , Ph.D or any other equivalent programme in any university or organizations around the world. They are also eligible to assume the role of a psychologist in any applied field in any organization. Further, they could teach in colleges and universities if they fulfill the criteria prescribed by Universities Grants Commission(UGC).
The program's diverse coursework and scope helps aspiring psychologists, practitioners, academicians and researchers to develop effective, integrative and holistic skills and methods to contribute at large to the society by supporting healthy and community life.

Course Work

The Department of Psychology at IIPR is a collaborative community, where students provide mutual support to one another and work closely with the faculty within the department.
The coursework for M.Sc. Psychology comprises of both theory & practical papers, giving students a strong grounding in theoretical as well as the application of the theory in various settings in the field of Psychology.
Emphasis on research, internship and extension activities.
Compulsory field work in every semester. The students are encouraged to take part in all means that will benefit the society in large by organizing workshops/outreach programmes and so on.
Students are posted to various centres for practicals and internships which are part of the curriculum.
Educational trips are organized regularly to give the students an experience of the application of Psychology in various fields.
Dissertations are part of the curriculum in the second year. This gives the students an experience in scientific writing and publication.
Students are encouraged to enrol themselves in workshops and conferences in the respective areas of interests.
Personal mentoring programs are held in a regular basis. This provides a platform for the students to share their concerns regarding academics or other personal issues. It provides the students a platform to grow, mature and help them blend and balance their personal and academic life


Specialization:

All students opting for a Master of Science Degree in Psychology will be studying four compulsory broad specialization areas - Child Psychology, Clinical Psychology, Counselling Psychology and Industrial Psychology. The course provides equal emphasis to each of these four areas of specialization. This ensures that there is no lacunae in the knowledge and information students take back with them at the end of their course, thereby giving them opportunities to excel in any area they opt to pursue!
Further, students will be made to undergo a minimum of 150 hours of supervised internship in the area of their interest. Students are posted in different set ups wherein they pursue an internship in places of their interest in the field of mental health like hospitals, clinics, education centers, schools, family welfare centres, rehabilitation centres, counselling centres, industries/ organizations, etc. These postings help the student to bridge the gap between theory and practice. This is a supervised exercise monitored by an internal and external supervisor which is assessed and evaluated from time to time providing students with regular feedback on their performance and progress.

As part of orienting and training students in the field of research, each student will be given personal training to pursue a compulsory research project in any area of their interest under the guidance of qualified and experienced faculty.
